On the trails of the past- A book born from the silence of those who can no longer speak. This book is not fiction. It is not a story. It is a testimony.
ON THE TRAILS OF THE PAST
is the voice of a generation raised in the silence of the cold walls of communist orphanages. A painful but necessary journey through the shadows of an era in which thousands of children were reduced to mere numbers, deprived of love, identity, and dignity. It is the cry of those who were not heard then… and not even after.
In communist Romania, up until 1989, more than 15,000 children died in these “state” institutions, without their names ever being spoken with gratitude or sorrow. They were nobody’s children. The children of the system. The forgotten children.
This book does not seek to create sensationalism. It seeks truth.
It does not wish to inspire pity. It seeks conscience. It does not ask for tears. It asks for memory.
The author, himself raised in the orphanages of that time, rebuilds from shards of soul and memory the road from darkness into light. It is a lesson in survival, in resilience, and also a brutally honest radiography of a regime that suppressed not only freedoms but also childhoods.
ON THE TRAILS OF THE PAST is a promise that the truth will no longer be hidden.
This is a book written not only for those who lived it—but especially for those who never had the chance to tell it.
🕰 SILENT TESTIMONIES
Real fragments. Unspoken truths. Experiences shared for the first time.
📚 WHAT CAN YOU FIND IN THIS BOOK?
We cannot heal what we refuse to acknowledge. And a nation who hides the wounds of its past does nothing but passes them on, silently, to the generations that follow. Truth, no matter how painful, is the only foundation on which a world without the repetition of the same mistakes can be built. —Nicolas Valentin Neculai

📷 THE VISUAL RECONSTRUCTION OF THE PAST
"What was never photographed, but truly happened"
🔍 Why did I choose to use images generated by artificial intelligence?
This book is a living testimony. My own. But unlike others, it holds no childhood photos.
In the romanian communist orphanages of the 1970s-1980s, there was no luxury of being photographed. There was no one to keep a picture of me or of other children suffering in silence—in cold bathrooms, empty dormitories, or dining halls where bread was broken in silence.
I lived those moments.
I felt them in my flesh, in my mind, in my soul.
And because I have no visual evidence, I chose to reconstruct it through artificial intelligence, guiding every detail from real memories.
They are not mere “generated drawings.” They are fragments of memory rebuilt, real scenes transposed into images with the help of technology. Every lost gaze, every iron bed, every gesture of an abandoned childhood—they are real. Only the tool used to render them is new.
These images are not meant to impress aesthetically.
They are meant to hurt.
To awaken.
To speak without words what went unsaid for decades.
🕯 And for those who seek documentary evidence, here are several independent sources that confirm the reality endured by thousands of children during that time:
- Memorial of Sighet – Testimonies of children from orphanages
- Radio Free Europe – The truth about Romania’s communist orphanages
- The Conversation – Post-1989 testimonies
- ADST – A Lost Generation: The Rush to Adopt Romania’s Orphans
This is the story of a child who had no photograph, but who today has a voice.
And through these images—even digitally generated—you will be able to see what was never photographed, yet truly happened.
